Where to go in Florida?

I need travel help! My boyfriend and I want to go to florida, somewhere near a beach. We're not looking to go somewhere that's spring-break-ish, but we would like to go somewhere that has good restaurants and some sort of night life, shopping, etc. So basically somewhere that's in or near a city but also on the beach. He was thinking Orlando but I thought that was too touristy. I was thinking maybe Ft Lauderdale. Help!
