Pediatric patients who are not following directions.....Please, only answers from medical professionals.?

I'm a MA, and I work at a pediatricians office. I often find myself dealing with a child who doesn't want to follow direction when I'm trying to get his weight, height, vitals signs, history, etc.... What are some things I could do, and what should I not do?
